Growing Green Communities – Mayor Bob Dixon of Greensburg, KS addresses the 2011 Texas Rural Challenge from Growing Green Communities on Vimeo.

Greensburg, Kansas, a town of 1,400, was 95 percent destroyed by an F5 tornado late on the evening of May 4, 2007, killing 11 people.

But through this disaster, Greensburg decided not just to rebuild, but also to send a bold message to the rest of the nation. They decided to rebuild Greensburg as a model green community. Greensburg adopted a resolution stating all city municipal facilities be constructed at the highest sustainable level. Leading by example, city and county administrators, residents, and business owners bought into sustainability, making Greensburg a model for environmentally efficient living.

“We were blessed with the tremendous opportunity to do something.”
